Grade 8-12
Mathematics
(Algebra I)
Standard 9

Students solve a system of two linear equations
in two variables, algebraically, and are able to
interpret the answer graphically, and they
are able to use this to solve a system of
two linear inequalities in two variables,
and to sketch the solution sets.

Previously Published Data

1.) Students will solve the following systems of equations algebraically, then graph each system on the same set of axes.

  • x + 4y = 1 and 2x - 3y = -9
  • x - 3y + 0 and 3x + y = 7
2.) Working in groups, students will solve systems of inequalities and show their work on large grid paper. Each group will justify their process and results to the class.
3.) Students will solve the following, graph their solutions, and shade the feasible region:
  • y < -2x + 4 and y > 3x - 4
  • 2y + x < 6 and 3x - 6 > 4
4.) Students will match graphs to systems of equations and/ or inequalities.

  • Previously Published Data

1.) Students will solve and graph systems of equations and inequalities.

2.) Given a graph, students will state the system of equations that are represented by the graph.
3.) Given a graph of inequalities, students will state a system that represents the shaded region.
4.) Students will apply their knowledge of systems to work problems using two variables.
5.) Students will solve Problems of the Week, such as, "On most days, Abel spends no more than two hours on math and science homework. If math always takes about twice as long as science, what is the maximum time Abel usually spends on science?" On this type of problem, students thoroughly explain their reasoning, stating what is asked, strategies they will use to solve the problem, etc.
