Previously Published Data

1.) Students will complete the following using the Four-Step Method: Each winter the elephant seals return to Ano Nuevo State Park on the California coast. On the first day of their return, rangers counted 5 elephant seals lying on the beach. On the second day, 6 more seals arrived. On the third day 7 more seals arrived. Each day the number of seals that arrived increased by one more than the number of seals that arrived the day before. At this rate, how many seals will be on the beach at the end of the eighth day? Restate problem; choose a strategy; solve the problem; and check your answer

2.) Students will write directions for the teacher to follow as literally as possible for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. For example, if a direction states "put the peanut butter on the bread," the teacher could place the jar of peanut butter on the bread. This will show students how specific their directions need to be. Give them a second chance to re-write their directions.

Previously Published Data

1.) Students will complete the following, show their work, and explain their thinking in strategy selections: Farmer Brown has cows and chickens on his farm. Billy Bird flying around above the farm counts 23 heads, and Arnold Ant scurrying around on the ground counts 62 legs. How many cows and chickens does Farmer Brown have on his farm? Using Base Ten blocks describe to a small child who only understands addition what actually takes place when you multiply 7 x 83. Make trades wherever possible so that your answer with the blocks comes out an actual number that could be written down. Estimate to verify your answer.
