Previously Published Data

1.) Students will work in groups in a simulation of buying a home without furniture or appliances. Their task is to buy everything they need with a $5,000 budget and to spend as much as possible without exceeding $5,000. Working in groups, each student will get a newspaper classified section and store sales and a recording sheet. Students write down items they choose and keep a running total, as one does in a checkbook by recording the expense and deducting it from the balance remaining. One student will record each items' cost and add as items are chosen. Another student in the group will subtract each item from the $5,000 to see how much money remains to be spent. Other students in the group can double check the mathematics.

Previously Published Data

1.) Students will show their work and explain their thinking while doing this problem:

Bob went to the store with $8.00. He spent $.48 on candy and $.56 on gum. As he left the store, he found a quarter on the ground. On the way home he lost $1.37 that fell out of a hole in his pocket. As he walked in the door, his mother gave him $4.00 for work he had done for her. How much money does he have now?
