Data
1.) Students represent problems like the following
with
manipulatives and numbers and symbols:
Tom was running home with ten marbles in his pocket.
Two marbles fell out; but he picked up three more along the road. He lost
four marbles and found one more. How many marbles made it home with Tom?
Nora collects toy bears. She had four when her
grandmother gave her one more. Nora gave two bears to her best friend.
She had a birthday party and got three bears as gifts. How many toy bears
does she have now?
Michael earned allowance money for chores but
had to pay money back when he had to be reminded about the chores. He emptied
the garbage, earning $0.25 and made both his bed and his little brother's
bed for $0.10 each. He had to be reminded to clear the table, losing $0.15.
He swept the front walk for $0.50, but he left the bath towel on the floor
losing $0.10. If he had $1.75 when he began his chores, what does he have
now?

1.) Students will use manipulatives as well
as record each step of the following story problem:
Clara was the bank courier. Her job was to collect
and deliver the mail. She picked up some letters that her boss wanted delivered.
As she left her office, Jane handed her five more letters. She left two
letters on Jose's desk and picked up one more. After visiting a few more
offices, she doubled the mail in her pack. She left eight letters on Dan's
desk. The rest she took to the Post Office. If her boss had given Clara
three letters at the beginning of her route, how many letters did she take
to the Post Office?
Jake recycled soda bottles to earn money. He had
his wagon almost filled with bottles when he found three more. As he walked
along, the wagon hit a bump and two bottles broke. Mr. Scott gave him five
bottles, and Jake's friend Franz borrowed five for a science experiment.
If Jake started out with twenty six bottles in his wagon, how many does
he have now?
