Previously Published Data

1.) Students work in pairs and draw one of the following: a spaceship, a bus or a raft. They place 10 tiles on their drawing, indicating 10 seats. One students rolls a die or spinner numbered 1-5 and puts the indicated number on the tiles. The other student, then rolls the die and does the same thing using bears of different colors. On a separate sheet of paper they write the equation to tell what happened. The next two days they repeat the process using different drawings - raft, spaceship or bus.

2.) The same activity can be used for subtraction with some modifications. Ten tiles are placed on the drawing. One partner selects the number of bears desired, 1-10 and puts them on. The other partner then decides how many bears to take off. Students then write an equation to explain what they just performed.

3.) Students sit at a small table and listen to recorded stories involving addition and subtraction. They use manipulatives to show the stories and then write the equations on paper.

4.) Students tell an addition or subtraction story by sketches that show their work and write an equation underneath. These drawings are made into a class book.

Previously Published Data

1.) Students are assessed on an individual basis by the teacher/ helper

2.) Students will create their own equation for an addition and subtraction problem. They will represent their equation with a sketch.

3.) Given an equation, students will explain to the teacher/ helper what it means.

4.) Shown an equation and sketch with one incorrect step, students will point out the mistake and correct it.
