1.) During Shared Writing the students and teacher choose a common experience and cooperatively compose a text based upon the subject. These Shared Writing texts teach students how to construct words by connecting letters and sounds and how to make connections between reading and writing. The writing is based on the student's experiences, interests, strengths, and needs. Be knowledgeable of each student's strengths so that all students can be encouraged to use their knowledge in the writing process. Once the text has been negotiated, share the role of the scribe with the students. The message or story is written on large butcher paper. Students are called on randomly to contribute sounds or words they hear in the text and to write on the butcher paper up front. Act as the scribe in situations where students cannot hear the sound, such as the silent e in the word like. Daily Shared Writing sessions foster content and skill development in a writing program.

2.) Provide students with journals for their own independent writing. During this time, students write about self-selected topics. It fosters creativity and confidence and allows students to see themselves as successful writers. Journal (independent writing) allows students to practice what they have been learning about how words work. Acts as an observer and be available as a resource to help students as they face problem solving situations.

Journal writing is an excellent product to assess. Use their writing to identify skills they have mastered, then examine that data to direct lesson planning. Ask students to share their journals with the class; every writer needs an audience.
