1.) Students will read from a literary selection containing complex sentences. From this selection they will identify independent and subordinate clauses which they later use as a model for writing their own sentences. Example: After the class has read The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, the teacher selects passages depicting Tan's writing style for students to re-read aloud. Students then analyze the sentence structure in these passages.

Passage: "The play area was bordered by wood-slat benches where old-country people sat cracking roasted watermelon seeds with their golden teeth and scattering the husks to an impatient gathering of gurgling pigeons." Directions: From the above quotation, students will:

  • Identify the independent and subordinate clauses
  • Identify parts of speech and sentence structure, such as subjects, verbs, and participles
  • Change the sentence so it is written as two shorter sentences
  • Contrast the effects of the different versions
  • Write an original sentence patterned after the author's sentence

  •

Follow-up: Students read their original sentences aloud to the class
