Vocabulary Workshop Second Course.

Have students work in groups to complete the Vocabulary Study Log using selected high utility vocabulary from the reading selection. Students should write their own sentence, create a picture, and demonstrate its use in order to ensure retention of the meaning.

Students can work with a partner to practice giving the definition of the word and to explain how the word origin meaning contributes to the meaning of the vocabulary word used in context.

One assessment involves checking the students' retention of the vocabulary meaning and the students' ability to explain how the word origin contributes to the meaning of the vocabulary word as used in the text. An assessment over time requires students to make generalizations about the studied vocabulary words, in terms of root words, prefixes, and suffixes, and the relationship of word origin meanings to present day usage of the words.
