1.) Students Guess word meaning from context clues and clarify word meaning through use of definition.

Pre-Publication Data

1.) Once students have been given the word pair sheet and they have chosen a pair with which to work, the words should be researched in current reading materials and in the dictionary. Have students complete the sheet using both their own thoughts and the words in context. Students should think about the pictures, anecdotes, thoughts, and emotions that the words evoke. 

Once the "t-chart" is completed, have students make a list of transition words. Next, students should look at the example paragraph skeleton shown. Students are then ready to write contrast paragraphs using the two words they have chosen.



1.) Have students use weekly vocabulary in sentences.

1.) The following criteria can be used to assess the Vocabulary Contrast Paragraphs:

  • Correct meanings of the words are identified 
  • Clear, interesting distinctions are made between the two words 
  • Precise meaning of each word is developed 

  • Paragraph is written clearly with appropriate transitions
