Night Journeys, by Avi.

Comparison-Contrast Patterns:  After reading Night Journeys, by Avi, have students analyze the differences and similarities between the characters Robert and Elizabeth.  A Ven Diagram can help organize student's thoughts.














Previously Published Data

1.) Comparison-Contrast Patterns: Have students study a piece of fiction, such as Eloise Jarvis McGraw's The Golden Goblet). Using a highlighter, students can indicate words and details that indicate similarities and differences. For example, analyzing the differences and similarities between the characters Gebu and Ranofer in The Golden Goblet, a Venn Diagram can help organize students' thoughts.



1.) Students should be able to write a paragraph which illustrates their
understanding of compare/ contrast patterns.
Prior to writing, they should create a chart or Venn Diagram to help organize their thoughts. Assess the writing using the following criteria: 

Content vocabulary is used correctly 
Paragraph is written clearly with appropriate transitions. 

Writing conveys a clear understanding of how the objects compare and differ. 

Several examples are cited.
