In two-part stories, list key vocabulary words from the first part of the selection and have the students use these words to summarize out loud what has happened before reading the second part of the selection. (See suggested activities Cards 77-81) Previously Published Data Vocabulary Study Sheet: Once students have found several theme words and can find their way around a thesaurus, students are ready to build upon their knowledge and recognition of shades of meaning within common vocabulary. Have students fill out a vocabulary study sheet for each word. These sheets can be put in a folder for an ongoing creation of a student thesaurus. Example of Vocabulary Study Sheet: Theme Word: Happy New Word (Synonym): Jubilant Part of Speech: Adjective Original context: The birthday celebration was a jubilant occasion. Definition: To show or feel great joy; rejoice; exult. Dictionary Example: The crowd at the concert was jubilant. My Own Sentence: The wedding was a jubilant occasion for the bride, groom, and all in attendance. Students should be able to use a dictionary, thesaurus, and literature to find appropriate responses to fill in this study sheet. |

Previously Published Data Shades of Meaning Story: Students can demonstrate their use and understanding of these shades of meaning words by creating a short story with dialogue. Give them a word bank of shades of meaning words that have been researched and discussed in class. For example: Good - "accurate," "angelic," "okay," "satisfactory," "superb" Happy - "cheerful," "glad," "optimistic," "tickled," "jubilant" Assess this work using the following criteria: Synonyms for theme words show varied uses.
