Students must identify the key point and the supporting details in each section of the graphic organizer. Have the students then rewrite the information in essay form. With their partners, students will peer edit and revise their essays, paying particular attention to their organization. Each paragraph should have a key point and supporting details. For example: To show time: first, during, as soon as To compare items: similarly To contrast items: on the other hand To emphasize a point: for this reason Students use information from the essay to compose an "apprentice wanted" advertisement appropriate to their trade. These can be published in Colonial newspaper format using Student Writing Center, Writing Center, or ClarisWorks. Students can gather materials, prepare a script, and do an oral presentation about their trade. The whole class can put together a Living History Colonial Day in which they represent their trades.
