1.) As an introduction to this unit, have students read a biography of a person, past or present, who has brought "peace" to the world in some way. The person might be an artist, a teacher, an inventor, a spiritual or a political leader. Have them summarize information from the book orally, sharing the contribution with classmates. Listeners will take notes, recording the main ideas and some details to refer to when participating in class discussions. Have students create a class book called "Peacemakers at School" using Hyperstudio and a video camera. Since these peacemakers are school staff and student body members, students will capture on video incidents of good deeds at school, then later (in partners or individually) choose one picture to import to a group Hyperstudio stack. Once the selection is made, students will step into the life of the peacemaker and write a narrative story or biographical incident (real or imagined). Students finally will present their "Peacemakers at School" stack and stories to a parent group. An additional activity involves having students compose and recite an original poem about the topic of peace in our world. They can find or create a picture that symbolizes the idea of the poem. Student will share the poem (typed and formatted in Print Artist) in a small group, then join their pictures and poems to form a quilt bulletin board of peace. |
