1.) Students will write using both simple and compound sentences to share their mathematical thinking and problem solutions.

Example:

Farmer Brown has cows and chickens on his farm. Billy Bird flying around above the farm count 23 heads, and Arnold Ant scurrying around on the ground counts 62 legs. How many cows and chickens does Farmer Brown have on his farm?

Student Response:

I need to find out how many cows and chickens Farmer Brown has on his farm. There are a total of 23 animals since Billy Bird counted 23 heads, and each animal can have only one head. Arnold Ant counted 62 legs. I know that cows have 4 legs and chickens have 2 legs. I made a table and started by guessing the number of cows and checking to see if the number of legs of cows and chickens would total 62.

Cows 5 x 4 = 20

Chickens 18 x 2 = 36

23 animals = 56 legs

Since I need 6 more legs, I took 3 chickens away, and added 3 cows for a total of 8 cows and 15 chickens.

Cows 8 x 4 = 32

Chickens 15 x 2 = 30

23 animals = 62 legs

These numbers gave me a total of 23 heads and 62 legs. Therefor, Farmer Brown has 8 cows and 15 chickens.
