Teach fairy tales in Unit 2--Rich and Poor, Cinderella, Three Wishes, Goose That Laid the Golden Egg, The Empty Pot, The Simple Prince--for same theme in different cultures.

















Previously Published Data

1.) After students have participated in the oral discussion and listening activities, give partners a blank Venn diagram. Have them label one side Goldilocks and the Three Bears and the other side Somebody and the Three Blairs. Have students list at least three things ideas/ facts/ phrases in each section. Have individual students illustrate each story showing the main differences in the setting and character portrayal. Beneath each illustration, have the students write a sentence to explain the plot. Other folk tales that are appropriate for this activity are The Three Little Pigs, Jack and the Beanstalk, or Cinderella.

1.) One piece of assessment is the Venn Diagram. Students should be able to write at least three items in each section of the Venn Diagram comparing the two versions of the story. Venn Diagram: 

Assess for completeness and accuracy:

Score 4: includes all three story elements (characters, setting, plot); may include more than three ideas in each section 

Score 3: (at standard) one or two story elements listed; at least three ideas in each section 

Score 2: one or two story elements listed; fewer than three ideas in a section 

Score 1: incomplete ideas; one or more sections of the diagram left empty 

Illustration: Evaluate the student's illustration of the story elements:

Do the two pictures illustrate the setting accurately? Characters:

Does the picture portray the characters correctly?
