After reading Chapter 18, students will pair up to answer the questions at the end of the chapter. This review is excellent because it goes over the many terms used in government and also requires the students to explore their own world. Students will go out into the community and tap its resources (people, newspapers, internet sources, and courthouse workers) to find out information about each position as well as the names of the current office holders. After doing this preliminary work, each student will then choose a person in local government. Students must set up a time to interview that person and ask them pre-written questions about their job. Students must show the questions to the teacher before they meet with their person. This information will be put into a short report to present to the other students. In addition, several students may ask their person to come in to our class at a later date. |
Use a general rubric or one of your choosing. What is important is that students begin to understand the role of the various officials of the county. The teacher should help the students make the leap from the importance of local government to state and national government. Be sure to discuss the rewards of public service and offer information as to how to work toward becoming a part of the government process.
