Gardner, David. The California Oath Controversy. Berkeley: UC Press, 1967. Internet calhistory.org |
After reading Chapter 14, each student will use the Internet to locate famous Hollywood personalities from the 1940ís. Then they will further investigate several of these figures and try to determine if those people were tagged by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) as a possible Communist. For almost 15 years over 200 Hollywood actors, actresses, filmmakers, writers, directors, etc., were denied work in the industry. Write a dialog between one of these people and the HUAC defending your position. It may include your rights under the Fifth Amendment as well as your right to work. Your script must be factual and the Committee must reach a decision in your case. Your script will be copied so members of the class can take part in your dialog as HUAC members at the Senate meeting. The dialog should last from 3 to 5 minutes. |
