After reading Chapter 1, students will form small groups and construct a visually pleasing time line of California Indians from their prehistoric past to the present.  Since
35,000 years will be represented, they will allow one inch for each 1,000-year period of
time so their papers will be about 3 feet long.
The time line should include facts from pages 19-25 as well as:

1. Prehistoric period begins (arrival of first settlers in California)
 2. Columbusís first voyage across the Atlantic
3, Historic period begins (Europeans begin to settle in and write about
California
4. California Indian population decreased to about 15,000

Rubric:

3- The time line should be easy to read, colorful and imaginative.  Facts are
written or drawn onto the time line and contain enough information so the viewer understands the fact shown.  There are no spelling errors.

2- Time line is readable, has some color and is fairly imaginative.  Facts are listed on the timeline with some information given.  There are one or two spelling errors.

1- Time line is lopsided, dates are hard to read and facts are too brief to
understand the point.  The spelling errors detract from the presentation
