Skills:
 
Examine the role of California in Americaís growth an development as well as its place in todayís world economy.
 
Describe the physical features of the state and the role that geography has played throughout its history.
 
Examine the role of the American Indian both before    and after contact with Europeans.
         
        1.) The significance of early explorations and settlements.
         
        2.) The importance and growth of the missions and their role in 
         the settlement of California.
           
        3.) The effects of presidios and pueblos.
         
        4.) The development of Mexican rule and the secularization of the
        missions.
           
           
          Skills:
           
          Review the sites of early explorations by land and by sea 
          and the outcome of the first settlements.
           
          Describe the hardships endured by the Spanish 
          missionaries as well as their treatment of the local 
          Indian population
           
          Identify the important military settlements and the start 
           of civilian settlements.
 
Describe Mexican Rule and ensuing secularization of the missions.
 
Standard 9.3

Students analyze the early settlements of sea traders, 
 overland explorers, migrants and gold seekers in terms of:
 

 
1.) The effect of the Russians, French and British in 
 California
 
2.) The significance of Mexican California 
 
3.) The importance of the American takeover of 
 California and Mexicoís loss

Describe the many hardships faced by each      group
as they settled California
 
Examine the Bear Flag Revolt, the Mexican War, 
 and finally the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

Students analyze the California Gold Rush in terms of:

 
1.) The significance of the Marshallís discovery of gold
 
2.) The ensuing flood of immigrants into California.
 
3.) The pioneer spirit present in the gold fields.
 
Skills:
 
Discuss John Marshallís discovery of gold and map the early flood of immigrants into California.
 
Describe the pioneer spirit of men and women who came to work the gold fields and the hardships they endured.
 
Standard 9.5

Students analyze the economic and social growth with its elements of lawlessness and controversy  following the Gold Rush era in terms of:

 
1.) The significance of the first Constitution and the 
 Constitutional Convention.
 
2.) The continuing importance of the mining camps as well as    the growth of San Francisco and Los Angeles.
 
3.) The growing prejudice against ethnic minorities.
 
Skills:
 
Explain the purpose of the Constitutional Convention.
 
Discuss how the mining camps fueled the growth of San Francisco.
 
Describe life in early Los Angeles.
 
Relate several reasons that prejudice against minorities     began to mount after the Civil War.

Students analyze the various problems that emerge as the state continues to grow in terms of:

       
        1.) The changes brought about by the Civil War.
         
        2.) The significance of a long period of railroad domination  over
        the economics and politics of the state.
         
        3.) Reform in business and labor issues and early Civil Rights actions.
         
        4.) The boom of the 1920ís as it affected agriculture, industry, 
         transportation.
         
        5.) The relationship between unemployment and 
         discrimination during the Great Depression and  the wave of 
         strikes and discontent.
         
        6.) Its importance during World War II. 
           
          Skills:
           
          Discuss the importance of the railroad industry and its 
           relationship to the politics of the state and its economy.
           
          List the early Civil Rights actions and their outcomes.
           
          Show the relationship between Californians and the wave
          of newcomers during the Great Depression.
           
          Discuss Californiaís contributions to World War II.
         
        1.)  The postwar pressures of anti-communism and loyalty oaths.
       
        2.)  The significance of the continuing urban growth.
         
        3.)  The changes in education, politics, ethnic population and 
         immigration.
         
        4.)  The development of the Pacific Rim.

terms of:

2.)  The importance of agriculture and ranching.
 
3.)  The development of environmental concerns in the    timber industry.
 
4.)  The diversity of our population.
 
Skills:
 
Discuss the various water projects around the state and environmental concerns of such development.
 
Examine the progression of small family farms and
ranches to the modern agribusiness developments.
 
List the concerns of proponents and opponents of the timber issue.
 
Describe the racial and ethnic diversion of 
California  in terms of customs, ideals and beliefs.
