Previously Published Data

1.) Students will prepare a newspaper from Ancient Roman times to be shared with parents and other sixth grade classes. The following areas are to be covered:

  • Geographer - A student prepares a map or maps of ancient Rome to be included in the newspaper
  • Political Writer - An article or editorial on Roman governmental structure, such as the rights of the patricians vs. those of the plebeians 
  • Political Cartoon - A cartoon or comic strip poking fun at a political or government situation in ancient Rome. 
  • Economics - An article or editorial on a situation involving the economy of ancient Rome, such as giving free bread to Romans 
  • Religions - Two or three articles or editorials on the rise of the monotheistic religions of Judaism and Christianity 
  • Society and Culture - Several articles or announcements of entertainment, festivals, literary events or fashion shows in Ancient Rome 
  • Science and Medicine - Several articles on achievements in these areas
  • People - Articles on each of the following and their contribution or importance: Aeneas, Romulus and Remus, Cincinatus, Julius Caesar, Cicero
  • Art and Architecture - Several articles on achievement in these areas

    2.) Students will need to do research to make sure that information is accurate and clearly portrays the Roman times.



    Previously Published Data

    After reviewing their local newspaper ask students for their input in modifying the generic rubric below to make it more specific for a newspaper. Using student input, modify the rubric and give it to students before they begin their work so they know the performance criteria. Before publishing the newspaper, assign "peer editors" to critique the final draft using the rubric. Allow time for revision after peer editing.
