We are going back in time to the year 700, about 1,300 years ago. You want to travel between the places marked on the map. There are no cars, trains, buses or airplanes. With your partner, plan a route that will let you travel from one of the locations to the other. Students will research and present a particular facet of ancient Chinese culture/history.

Presentations are to be typewritten, and an additional visual station display is required for a unit ending classroom jigsaw activity. Students tour (or host) the displays in shifts as a culminating event.

Topics for selection include:

*Chinese Philosophy (any one):

   Taoism / I Cheng / Mencius / Confucius / Zen Buddhism

*Chinese Literature (exact selection to be determined by teacher)

    poetry / legends and folklore (eg, Ode to Mulan ?) 

*Chinese Music

    Calligraphy / Painting in Ancient China

Written reports will be graded on an individual basis, with attention given to conventions of writing, as well as to content. Reports should be accompanied by an outline.

         *Presentation is understandable and provides sufficient information
2 Points:  *Gathers limited, accurate information
         *Shows partial understanding of content
         *Exhibits limited insight and creativity

1 Point:   *Fails to gather accurate information
         *Shows little or no understanding of content
         *Does not exhibit insight or creativity

Display stations may be evaluated in similar fashion with this rubric.
