Settling the Old Northwest (Settlement of the United States Series). Encyclopedia Britanica Educational Corporation,
 1990 (Video). 
This program examines the conflicts between the people in the land between the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. Segments (a) locate the region, (b) review the
reasons for westward expansion, (c) detail what is occurring in the rest of the country, (d) identify the native Americans of the area, (e) show how leaders fought to maintain control of the land, and (f) discuss the treaties, wars, and settlements that helped the United States grow from coast to coast. This production uses reenactments, animation, maps, and graphics to chronicle the settlement of this section of the United States.

Previously Published Data

1.) Students work in teams to plan and develop a report on one of the trails west. Report should include:

  • Location of the routes 
  • Purpose of each journey 
  • The influence of terrain, rivers, vegetation, and climate 
  • Life in the territories at the end of these trails 

  • Map of locations, geographical features and terrain the trail covered

    2.) Students can either write a report or create a journal/diary of a fictional character which includes all of the above information.

    3.) As a class, students will produce a map display showing the major trails, the various transportation routes, the state and territory boundaries in 1850, and the areas of Mexican territories in the far west



    Previously Published Data

    Teacher assesses teams on the accurateness and authenticity of their report and map. Did it cover the original territories, locations and terrain?

    Students write an essay on the migration west explaining why people moved, hardships faced, and the influence of the terrain on the trails people took.

    Essay is to be scored using a rubric.
