1.) Divide students into eight groups. Each group will be assigned one of the following tasks to research and to prepare a report for the class.

  • Make a list of countries where religion has bee a factor in civil unrest or
  • Relate the Enlightenment and democratic ideals of 18th century America to the desire for religious freedom.
  • Report on any state or national election in which the religion of a candidate wa an issue. 
  • Give a chronological account of the origin and development of the Christian Coalition. Include leaders, candidates, party platforms, and editorial comments regarding its influence on the major political parties.
  • Use library resources to cite times when the federal government accepted or rejected a group's application for status as a religion, also explaining the benefit to the group of attaining that status. Give the government's criteria for such a decision, and how it differentiates between a religion and a cult.
  • Report on the history of the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. Cite one example of conflict in a community when individuals have challenged the phrase.
  • Explain the current federal restrictions on clubs in schools that are based on religion or include prayer.
  • Cite challenges to and changes in the laws governing prayer in school. Explain the current status of prayer in school.

  • 2.) Student groups will present their findings to the class, providing handouts and using visual aids, and citing sources of information.

    In addition students will write an essay on the part that religion has played in the development of countries, and conflicts that arise because of differences in religious beliefs. The essays will be assessed on the following criteria:

    · Conveys sense of history 

    · Uses examples to back up points 

    · Is logical and sequential 

    · Is clear and thoughtful
