Activity 1

Formal Research Assignment:

Students will select one modern country and its links to colonialism and imperialism:
Algeria, Australia, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Chad, China, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Libya, Malaysia, Mali, Mauritania, Mexico, Myanmar, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria,  Pakistan, Philippines, Somalia, South Africa, Viet Nam, , Western Sahara, Zambia.

Students select one country (no repetitions in class) and research its history, paying special attention to its experiences during the age of imperialism.  The papers should cover the following:  historical beginnings, what made it a candidate for take-over by another nation, existence under the rule of an imperialist nation, independence, and modern government.  Instruction will be given on writing a research paper

Students are subpoenaed to testify before a Senate committee in 1902. The committee is looking into the role of the United States in the Philippines, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. Groups are given the identify of a notable Expansionist or Anti-imperialist and prepare that historical character's testimony. One member of each group will play the role of the character during the hearing. Other group members will be either a newspaper reporter, a Senator or a futurist.  Each group will be assigned a historical figure that played a role in the Expansionism/Anti-imperialism debate at the turn of the century. Groups should then use the resources listed and those they develop to research the Expansionism/Anti imperialism question

Assessment 1

Students will be graded on their papers and their visual presentations.  Papers will include all aspects of a formal research paper and should be five pages in length.  In addition to the paper, students will prepare a visual which represents the country's experiences with imperialism to share with the classs.  This paper can be a cross-subject assessment for both social studies and English.  Teachers may choose to team teach the writing of a research paper at this level

The teacher and students will develop a rubric based on the following criteria:  use of primary resources, scope and depth of research, persuasiveness of position on issue, quality and resourcefulness of testimony and writings, involvement and interaction during the research and activity
